Vance is a purely political creature with no abiding policy goal beyond white nationalism. But he understands that any R with Presidential ambitions must start distancing himself from Trump. That's what he's gingerly trying to do here. And he won't be the last to do so.

I hope Bessent doesn't face such a crisis. But hope is no basis for overseeing the US economy. And so my real hope is that Bessent and his team have the wisdom to start rebuilding relationships and building trust before he needs it. Cause by then it's too late.

The COVID rescue package saved businesses, consumers, payrolls and helped ensure that the US recovered faster than any other OECD country. But none of that would have happened without that trust. Bessent starts in a vastly weaker position for obvious reasons, which should scare us all.

In 2020 when the COVID crash came Mnuchin, for all his flaws could be trusted by the Congress to deploy fiscal supports consistent with Congressional intent and did not have a history of blatantly lying to Congress or picking petty fights.

...if in fact it does pop in any fashion, it is such a huge chunk of the stock market right now that Bessent & the rest of Trump's financial team are going to need WAY more credibility and trust with Congress to address than they have banked to date.

Alabama not only gerrymandered to eliminate a minority seat but they delayed their primary only for the 2 Black seats and 2 adjacent seats so that they could box out Shomari. The fact that Trump is now trying to shore up Shomari’s opponent tells you how things are going for the GOP.
